Certainly my list was not meant to be exhaustive and I've not examined the S series, but the powershot A540 in our family makes very noisy images in the dark areas at anything over 200 ISO.

I suggest perhaps reading http://home.people.net.au/~cjeastwd/digital/inCameraArtifacts.html as it will give you some good ideas on understanding blotchy chroma noise and how to go about looking for the indications in the image.

:-)obakesanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13743339737847465926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709537690528523236.post-30634188686184492332009-01-08T09:27:00.000+10:002009-01-08T09:27:00.000+10:00As an alternative to the Canon G series, I'd consi...As an alternative to the Canon G series, I'd consider the Powershot S series (S3, S5, SX10). Basically half the price of the G series and the only spec not supported out of the box is RAW (although I've heard you can hack the firmware I haven't done it).

On the latest model you get 20x optical zoom as opposed to the G10's 5x; then it has a "super macro" down to 0cm. Plus it takes AA batteries so if you run out of juice you just need a service station, rather than a special charger and a powerpoint.

Combined with a little tripod like a Joby gorilla grip, it makes sense for the hiking scenario - I actually carry this in my bag every day :)

Potential downsides: faster ISOs tend to be quite grainy (looks awesome for black and white), not sure if it meets the "rugged" requirement (it's fine for my urban existence, but hiking might be different).200okhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03236705748240585685noreply@blogger.com
