Shrinkflation

You may not have noticed it (but I suspect you have) that one of the ways of increasing the price of something is to give you less of it for the same price. Its been around for decades now and has acquired the (I thought well known) name of Shrinkflation. I recently bought some Tiramisu which comes in a glass "cup" again because I end up using the cups as drinking glasses. However when I picked them up in the supermarket I felt the cup was smaller ... it was, but cunningly smaller than I'd expected.

Below is a pair of pictures showing the new cup beside the old cup. The red marker shows where the smaller cup water level is and how that shapes up against the older one.


Then when I tipped that into the older cup its a lot less than half. The shape based on the sloped sides means that while the cup is just a bit smaller to look at, its less than half of what the older coup contained.

SR500 clutch cable sizes and standards

Recently my SR500 needed a new clutch cable:


So as this bike was a stock Japan Spec 1986 model I thought it would be straightforward to order a new part. I went to Yamaha (first mistake) and they confidently identified it and sourced a part for me from a local dealer with old stock.

It arrived and was too long. So I measured it and measured the old one from end to end of the sheath (which is what actually matters). I won't actually give that measurement and you'll see why soon. Below is the cable I had on the bike from purchase (used, and a Japanese import).

My measurement proved sort of worthless because nobody (and I mean nobody) knows the lengths of the cables they sell; they only talk in short, standard or long

You are fucking kidding me right?

So which cable do I have as my starting cable which was perfect then the Yamaha one was clearly too long ... Hmmm ... its fucking irritating when people in engineering and technical roles speak in qualitative language not quantitative language. You know, like "how many do you want" ... a few. Gives them five ... ahh, no mate I'll need a lot more than that.


Knowing nothing I had to make some assumptions ... what sizes did I now have? So I took a punt and ordered the short from someone else.


So now with two new cables I know that Yamaha supplied me the "long" and someone else supplied the short and my original cable was the fucking standard cable.

FUCK ME DEAD

So you can see from te above tape measure that there is about 100mm between each of them. Giving us
  •  +100
  • standard
  • -100
This means that if (refer to Fig 1 above) we measure from the end of the plain steel cap to the end of the black end (that fits into the engine) the entire length is 960mm. You can now use that as a reference number for determining what you have because that's apparently "standard".

So now you know.

Shed batteries

Well after some time I've decided that the FLA (flooded lead acid) batteries I put into the shed are past their use by date. Not bad really as they were installed new in 2022, which is about 4 years ago.

I'm presently running a pair of donated 24V LiFePO4 batteries that a mate bought (believing the Temu ad) in parallel.


you can see that the foot-print of the pair of 24V's is about half what the pair of 12V's was but they had a RC of 95 (meaning that the battery would survive for 95 minutes under a constant 25amp load before 10.5V is hit ... optimistic if you ask me) 

I've never been really satisfied with how the recharge after discarges (probably due to the internal resistance of FLA). See this post for my analysis back then. 


This is one ofthe tiddlers ... rated at 200Ah


talk about optimism ... I pulled one apart and the Cells were 7Ah and there wasn't anywhere near enough of them. Further, the BMS was clamped at 9Amps.

Well that's 400W or so, so it'll do for now ... I'll post again when the new cells arive

Exonomics

I looked, I couldn't find this word, so I'm making it up

Exonomics: the study of everything that isn't economic or the use of bullshit theory to use "voodoo economics" to cheat you out of what's yours.

So, good old "Trickle Down" Economics is a good example of Exonomics


It could include:

External economics: the study of how outside factors (environmental, social, political systems) influence economic behavior, or how economic activity affects external systems.

Economics of the external: the economics of things outside traditional markets (like natural resources, social relationships, or intangible goods)

Economics of externalities: specifically on anything that's external (like carbon dioxide release from burning fossile fuels, external costs or benefits not reflected in market prices (like pollution or innovation spillovers)

Of course working out how to cost this in the corporate world is a known vexed problem.

Do Androids dream of Electric sheep? Do they indeed?!

Does Claude dream of electric sheep?

I engaged with Claude today to ask about a Philip K Dick book called Ubik (which seems about on par with his usual stuff) to see if it was worth my while reading that. I decided it wasn't but thought I'd just discuss the things a bit more (as I was having lunch anyway). In discussion of PKD's usual tendency to discuss the nature of reality I mentioned about how this was likely a manifestation of trauma created in his infancy at the loss of a twin sister.

So to cut to the chase, the summary of what ensued was this:

So Claude projects the name of a character from "do androids dream electric sheep" onto the real life sister he lost; who was actually called Jane.

I wonder what Freud would think of this?


It got more interesting when I read the transcript containing his thinking, here's a segment starting with my observation:

apparently he had a twin sister who died when he was very young. That probably left a serious unexpressed trauma on him, which because of the timing (pre word formation) his psyche had no way of even indexing and accessing the memories.

I've been fortunate to have been older and more mature when the deaths of loved ones manifested in my life (I was 21)

AI - confidently wrong

Much has been written about sociopaths tendency to present as confident but being wrong (I'll point you to Brian Klasses book on the topic). But AI is especially good at this:


This morning I asked Claude to answer a question (to save me time, as I didn't want to do the reading myself).

User prompt 1 of 7 - 06/07/2026, 10:36:09:

Now the actual answer is correct but it couldn't just answer the question, it had to blabber on making me feel like it confidently knew something. It didn't ... (pretty much like a politician).

Underline mine. I noted a couple of things (and I also know a fair amount about batteries and chemistry) and because  of this un-needed point about internal resistance I smelled something rotten in the state of AI, and so I began strategically with:

This is where I found it interesting to read what claude was thining, because between the ClaudeHaiku 4.5 prompt and the "you're right to push back" we see some thinking. I'll insert that below as it appeared in the transcript (underline mine). 

Claude Haiku 4.5:

The user is asking me to expand on my earlier statement about internal resistance being the reason lead acid batteries can deliver high discharge currents. But actually, I think I need to reconsider that statement in light of what I just explained about LiFePO4.

Looking back at what I said:

"this internal resistance is why lead acid batteries can deliver high discharge currents"

This statement is actually misleading or incorrect. Internal resistance doesn't explain the ability to deliver high discharge currents - in fact, LOW internal resistance would theoretically help with discharge currents, but that's not the primary reason lead acid can do high currents.

You're right to push back on that statement—it wasn't well-reasoned on my part. Let me clarify.

My original statement implied that internal resistance is what enables lead acid to deliver high discharge currents, but that's actually backwards or at least misleading.

So why is this here? Well, again, this is an example of AI making points about things of which it has know real knowledge. Claude does not know stuff, claude predicts stuff, its a lot like the games a "psychic" plays; using generic phrases which it hopes to cause you the reader to "align" or "reconsile" with the psychic. Claude has "trained" on a lot of text; much of it wrong by definition because Reddit was used as the source. Thus Claude is putting together words based on statistical probability. Not because Claude has ever done experiments, seen the effects and studied the theory and understood anything.

Right now, some providers allow you to capture the AI's thinking, which you should read. You have to download the transcript however. I'll be sad when this (inevitably) goes away.

My point is this:

Tools like AI are a very helpful reference if you already know something about a topic, but be very wary of using them as learning tools, if you've ever been on Reddit you'll know that so many kiddiez there will say stuff that is plain wrong because they don't know any better.

AI was trained on a poisioned chalice and it of course doesn't know.

Watch Carefully

I watched Ford vs Ferrari the other night and loved it. However right at the end I went "wait on a minute" hit pause and had to go back because suddenly Shelby was wearing a different watch. So I watched the end of the movie but the next morning I wanted to explore what I'd seen. So I grabbed a few shots and tweaked the gamma and found this:


I wish there was better to be had, but it is not any watch Shelby was wearing in the rest of the movie, and nor is it Ken Mile's watch.

I posted on Reddit a question but got nothing (well stupidity) and one suggestion I'll come back to. I asked the Google prompt (AI) (which is based on the majority opinion of whatever any twaddle is written on Reddit) has only the two well known versions.


Now we know its neither of those because the Carerra is a bicompax design (and this is tricompax) and we know that Kens watch hasa black face with white subdials (seen here clearly while he was doing pre-race reviewing of the track).


getting back to that Redditor suggestion; he proposed that it may be a Rolex Daytona ...


which it might well be, as from this angle the black bezel leans in that direction. If I try hard enough I can imagine the Rolex Crown on the watch crown.

What's so strange to me is that nobody else has noticed this little mystery.

Blew a fuse

So, the other day I went for a ride and found that my headlight wasn't working (I was on a short ride). I tried high beam and it was, so I thought "blown bulb" however ...  it was then I noticed that my neutral light was very dim and that the indicators were not working properly (not blinking).

After I got home I pulled the headlight off and checked the bulb.



All was fine, which wasn't a relief, because now I had to find what the problem really was. I lifted the seat and found that a fuse (was blown). 

Now its worth revisiting the bike and note that its not "original". As you can see below the airbox is missing and you can make out a tray under the seat which holds most of the electricals:


Including the slim battery:


which (importantly) has a "quick plug" type connection with a built in main fuse (of the blade type).

It was rated at 15A and I noted (in the manual) that the main fuse should be a 20A. I replaced the fuse then I checked wires to look for some sort of short (wire rubbing against inside of the metal bucket is a candidate) and all appears fine.

This leaves me with 2 questions:
  1. what caused the fuse to blow
  2. how then (with the fuse being blown) was my high beam getting power?
So I pulled the fuse and put my Multimeter (set to Amps and it reads up to 10) in across its place to see when current was flowing and began looking for problems. I quickly found that the headlight worked sometimes, but with a bit of movement went off and the meter rapidly climbed. I'd then turn off the light and resume after "moving it till it was ok again".

It took me a couple of days (no more than 4 hours each session) to work out that it was actually the loom rubbing against the steel of the bike ... look carefully at the picture below, you can see the loom resting against the steel of the headlight bracket.


I became confident this was the issue because when I relieved this pressure / contact (lifting up) the much higher power drain went away and the headlight operated normally.

I looked around and found some things worth observing:

1. weight pulling down on the harness from the cable


The loom ran under the cable for the exhaust valve decomression cable and

2.



The loom ran under a bracket which supports the tank from wobble. I thought perhaps if this was lifted up it would free the loom from fouling the bracket and consulted the manual:


ahhh hah ... so somehow this had been put together wrong some time back (probably 2016 when it was imported into Australia).

So I re-ran the cable back under the loom and ran the cable over the support:


which then lifted the loom away from that cable seen here:


which you can see elevated it and also took the weight off by running that cable for the exhaust decompression to under where the loom goes , this now relieved the headlight support bracket rubbing point.



3. I also "splinted" with some plastic (cut a section from a 2L milk bottle), some duct tape and a cable tie (which should also prevent it pulling out of that if it feels so inclined).

So, its now been test ridden and seems to be doing ok ... 

I fully appreciate that there will be some copper getting atmosphere in there now, which is less than ideal, but to do that job I'd have to strip back even more than I did as well as undo the loom searching for the wire, cutting and joining in a new piece and putting it all back together (probably adding several hours).

Lets see how long it lasts :-)

Claude the confident bullshitter

Its really interesting now that DuckAI is providing the "thinking" responce of its AI's as well as its output. So I asked Claude:

and it thought and answered:

Basically thinking "That's easy!!" ... Well, the answer sounded ok  to me.  So (being interested) I asked a follow up question

It was here I noticed a lot more activity on the thinking. So, when I reviewed  the thinking, despite its confidence it turns out that Claude may not have been so certain:

The thinking as it turns out was:

So, AI is not even "second hand thinking" its "hold my beer while I go dunning kruger" in this case (and perhaps many cases).

Watchdives Submariner WD7922

I noted that Watchdives had changed their logo from that Shield with the name in it to a Trident ... perhapsit was always like that and I missed it, but I thought I'd have a go at the Submariner 6538 style  (which turns out to be a homage of the Tudor Black Bay, itself a homage to the Sub 6538) that they sell under WD7922 with the Seiko VH31 mecha-quartz in it for that 4 ticks per second second hand (and the accuracy). It arrived today and I'm very happy to say its met and even exceeded my expectations. So firstly I'll show this picture of it on the strap I like to use (and because Blogger uses this as the thumbnail for the article)



Dimensions of the watch are:
  • case width = 37mm
  • bezel diameter = 38mm
  • thickness = 11mm (10 not counting the rise of the glass)
  • lug to lug = 45.5mm
  • lug width = 20mm
  • watch head (no band or bracelet) = 54g (Note, the Rolex is 73g)
Making it a very comfortable fit on a 6.5" wrist like mine.

The watch came in a nice carbon-fiber look case


with a nice touch on the zipper ...



Quality of the bracelet is perfect and clearly its end links are for this exact watch case.


note the double "quick release" heads there (which make removing the bacelet much easier than any bracelet I've taken off) and the beautiful job on the milled clasp).





That I bought this for US$92 (I don't know how they do it) the quality doesn't end there with a sapphire front glass that features AR (I guess on the inside).


The operation of the bezel is the best I've had yet on any watch and while I'm at it, I really like what they've done with the bezel. Gone is that bloody terrible full gloss polished ceramic found so many times and instead we've returned (I assume to) coated alluminium. I love the gold on black.

The lume is as I expected (good) but I haven't taken any lume shots yet.



The red triangle on the lume pip is somehow metalic looking and indeed the pip has a framing of gold just like the dial markers, hands and the Rolex of the day did.



So for someone with a preference for a light, no fuss accurate watch that needs no winding, but a new battery every couple of years. 

Now the question which I guess everyone is interested in is "how does it compare to the Bond"


so, let me leave you with this overlay which I've scaled based on the dial and dimensions of the case width (not the lug to lug). Photographic perspective (including lens) is slightly different (and I made a close guess on what they used in at Sotherbys).



Clearly there are differences in the case and the lugs between (not only) the Bond watch seems sligthly different to the version of that auction.  Lastly, let me put it up against my Seiko SRPE (which does not have a divers bezel)


Here the dial does look bigger but when overlaid its been done with the use of a chapter ring and a lot less bezel. If a divers bezel was to be included the diameter would need to be bigger or the chaper ring trimmed back (and a smaller glass like the Watchdives has).

To me, ultimately, for the price and for everything that it is as a watch: the Watchdives is a winner.

Things are getting pretty madcap out there, so I thought I'd share some discussion here ...  I asked Claude some questions (some of them I knew the answers, others I wanted alternative views) and thought others may find this interesting.

Oppo Find X2

Sometimes newer isn't better. Sadly, after smashing my Find X3 Pro (with a very small tumble) I found myself needing a new phone (fuck I hate glass phones, no really what drooling moron thought of this and why to the sycophantic fucktards in professional phone reviews keep going on and on about how premium it feels in their hand).  I'm rather sick of how pricy things are now, so I saved some money and got this "refurb with warranty" for AU$250 ... the extra cash left in my hand feels better than any phone IMO.

Strangely the X2 Pro (while older) has in my opinion a better camera system; indeed it has a proper optical long focal length camera done in the periscope style (see below).

This idea dates back some time to perhaps the Minolta DiMAGE X from 2002 (so like 24 years ago) when the sensors of the time were 3M pixels not 48 like the current ones.

note that it was mounted horizontally ... while the camera is held vertically.

The technology for this optical zooming (instead of digital crop "zooming") was important because at 3Mpixels you just don't have any room for cropping. Not to mention that since photography started we "zoomed" mostly with lens focal lengthe changes and kept film size and print enlargement  for zooming to a minimum because clarity loss was obvious..

Various phone/camera makers had a go at this (periscope lens design) over time, to enable the physics of a longer focal length without adding a great long bulge at the back of the phone; not many have stayed. Perhaps people have historically had a poor ability to judge pictures? People often buy add on lenses that make the back of the camera look weird and the phone unweildy, but I'll not start on that here.

The three cameras on the phone are specialised to different tasks, as seen here: as well as a similar sized 120° wide angle system which has a much smaller pixel size (making it less desirable in low light) with a slightly dimmer f2.2 aperture. 


This arrangement (using the IMX 698) gives quite some scope for cropping (say, up to x2) from the ample "general" photography lens and generally (even when shot with the wide) binned down to 13M Pixels don't too crap look crap (and you'd never bother digital zooming that) ... if you're unfamiliar with pixel and sensor sizes then I recommend you read the articles linked in the next paragraph to understand pixel binning (or throwing pixels in the bin to make better images) because compared to bigger sensors on actual cameras (like my m43 or Full Frame) because "size matters".

Long ago Nokia tried a super high density sensor and further analysis (here) employing digital zoom to make a lower pixel crop (they used a then stellar 39M pixel sensor and cropped and binned down to 5M pixel (about x7 enlargement) while Oppo is here capturing directly as a x5 enlargment (compared to a "normal" view) but perhaps a x10 on their standard wide lens.

So here's a sample image (reduced for the web) taken with that proper telephoto.

So in 35mm camera (who even knows what that looks like anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I digress) its equivalent to a 160mm lens, or mild telephoto ... perhaps a bit long for portraiture. Anyway lets look at what advantage over digital zoom this brings.

Next, here we have that and the "digital" zoom applied to their 48M pixel these zoomed in (not even to full pixel peeping)


Even at 50% (which you should know that I've chosen as the "compare on screen", because that is very close to what one sees when the full image is printed at 300dpi. Specficially that would be a print 25.4 x 33.9 cm; or 10.00 x 13.33 inches). The observant will spot that the RH picture is enlarged a bit more (61%) because if I zoomed to x5 it would automatically switch to the other lens...

At this size you can see far more detail in the grass that I don't even need to tell you that the native telephoto shot is the left hand side. The pixel binned digital zoom is over sharpened and lacks texture (even the grass has texture on the zoom) and resolution.

This however means that for video this periscope lens arrangement will be capable of doing x10 or about 300mm equivalent comfortably. That's impressive.

So, there you have it ... a much more compact phone than the new Oppo Find X10 Pro ... which looks like an amazing machine. However at the prices of these things are likely to be, that's a solid no way
